With effect 1 March 2023 Mr Roland Hendricks was appointed the National Director: Fire Services. Mr Hendricks has a wide and varied career serving on various spheres of government whilst gaining a wide range of operational, managerial and leadership experience. Mr Hendricks is passionate about serving our communities and eager to contribute towards making a difference through the opportunity provided to serve in this distinguished office.  

Short biography

In June 1989, Mr. Hendricks joined the erstwhile Western Cape Regional Services Council Fire Services as a recruit firefighter whereafter successfully completing his recruit training course, he joined the City of Bellville Municipal Fire Services as firefighter on 1 February 1990. That same year he was awarded the best student award by the Municipality after completing both his Junior & Fireman certificates through the South African Fire Services Institute.

He obtained his first officers commission of Station Commander (Divisional Officer) in 1998 and was handed the responsibility to manage the Durbanville Fire Station where he served until, he left the service of the City of Cape Town during August 2004. As Station Commander, he proudly served and managed the station for seven years, prior to joining the City of Tshwane Fire Services on 1 July 2005 as District Commander till 30 June 2008. On 1 July 2008 he joined the Gauteng Department of Local Government as Deputy Director Fire & Rescue Services and was later promoted to Director: Disaster Management Services within the Gauteng PDMC on 1 August 2013, and later transferred to the function of Director: Fire Services in which he served until 28 February 2020. Mr Hendricks joined the City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department on 1 March 2020, as Deputy Chief: Staff Officer in which position he served until 28 February 2023, prior to taking up the position of Director: Fire Services.

Director Hendricks completed his SAESI Associate Diploma in Fire Technology in 1997; completed his Advanced Diploma in Management Cum Laude at Southern Business School 2018, and BCOM Law Cum Laude at Southern Business School 2020.

I believe in our country, I believe in our people, and I believe in the officers and firefighters that serves them and believe that we can best serve our people by ensuring that we provide them with a Fire & Rescue Service which functions optimally, serves them diligently without fear or favour, and is able to keep them safe from harm. To achieve this, I am ready to roll-up my sleeves and work together with all stakeholders on all spheres of government, private sector, NGOS, civil society and others, to ensure that we bring back the pride and reposition Fire & Rescue Services where necessary to continue keeping our communities safe from fires. ​
