​​ ​​​Director: Fire Services and Coordination

Dr Musiwalo Moses Khangale is currently the Director: Fire Services within the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) since 01 June 2011. Until 31 May 2011, Dr Khangale was a Deputy Director responsible for the administration and oversight of the National Veld and Forest Fire Act, (Act No. 101 of 1998) within the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. Dr Khangale also served as a Manager: Disaster Management for the Tlokwe Local Municipality, North West Province from 2007 – 2009. Dr Khangale also worked in the City of Tshwane as an Emergency Services Official and a Disaster Management Officer.

He is in possession of National Diploma in Public Management (obtained in 1997) from the Tshwane University of Technology (formerly Technikon Northern Gauteng), Diploma in Disaster Management (obtained in 2004) and BTECH in Public Management (obtained in 2005) both from the University of South Africa. He also holds a Masters in Disaster Management (obtained in 2008) from the University of the Free State. During 2017, Dr. Khangale obtained a Philosophiae Doctorate in Development and Management through the North West University on the topic: A Model for integrating Disaster Risk Reduction in national multi-sectoral planning in South Africa.

Dr. Khangale has presented a paper on his research at the at the inaugural Southern Africa Society for Disaster Reduction Conference held in North West University during 2012 as well as at the 2nd Academic Network for Disaster Resilience to Optimise Educational Development (ANDROID) Residential Doctoral School held in the University of Salford, Manchester, United Kingdom from 8 to 10 September 2014.

  • His professional involvement includes the following forums:
  • An Advisory Board Member for the Higher Certificate in Veldfire Management, School of Natural Resources Management at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU).
  • Founding member of the Southern African Society for Disaster Reduction (SASDiR),
  • A member of the United Nations International Search and Rescue Advisory Group and
  • A Steering Committee Member of the Santam DCoG Partnership for Risk and Resilience,

As Director: Fire Services, within the National Disaster Management Centre Dr Khangale is entrusted with the responsibility to coordinate implementation of Fire Brigade Services Act in the country and contributing to the regional and global disaster risk reduction agenda.
